Team Parent 101:
How to be a Great Team Parent
STEP ONE – CREATE A GROUP TEXT AND/OR EMAIL LIST
The first thing you need to do is collect cell phone numbers and/or email addresses for all the
parents. Create a Group Text or Email List with all the parents preferred contact info. There are
apps that may be used as well!
STEP TWO – NOTIFY PARENTS OF LEAGUE EVENTS
All team parents will be notified of any league events by the Team Coordinator or Vice President.
It is each team parent’s responsibility to get this information to the parents of your players.
Below is an outline of the duties of a team parent:
UNIFORMS
SLL will provide each player a jersey and hat. The coaches will notify you of the color choice of
pants, belt, and socks which will need to be relayed to the parents of the players. This will need
to be done quickly to allow the parents time to have the uniform completed prior to the first day!
PICTURE DAY
SLL will notify you of the scheduled picture day. Please provide the families the schedule and
forms. You may be needed to help organize/assist during your scheduled time on picture day.
FIELD MAINTENANCE
SLL will be assigning “team shifts” on game days. Encourage your families to help pick up trash
before and after a game. Have your team check in with the field staff to see if there is
assistance needed in preparing the fields before AND after the
game.
SNACK SHACK DUTY
Each team will be assigned a “team shift” in our Suburban Snack Shack. This will be assigned by
SLL according to the game schedule. Most teams are 10-15 players and we will assign a “team” to
the snack shack. It will be the Team Parents responsibility to make sure this assignment is
complete. 3-4 parents from each team will be needed to complete the shift. Send out the
schedules ASAP so that parents can sign up, trade dates, make arrangements, etc. as needed.
SCOREBOARD DUTY
On the same night that your team is providing Snack Shack duty, we would like assistance with the
scoreboard. Ask for volunteers first and then assign additional families if there is assistance
needed.
TEAM SNACK DUTY (check for allergies)
There will be a team snack voucher for players on game day. This voucher is worth
$1.00 and will cover the choice of a hot dog, soft pretzel, bag of chips and the choice of a
water/juice. It is recommended that you collect the total up front from the parents at the
beginning of the season to cover snack costs. For example, 12 games = $12.00 collected per player.
This will be for home games and is typically offered as a “special” at away games but be prepared
in the event that there may be a price difference.
STEP THREE - KEEP EVERYONE UPDATED
You will need to keep everyone updated and informed regarding schedules, rain delays, make-up
games, team pictures, fundraisers, etc. as they come up. In addition to giving everyone new
information, you need to send a weekly reminder of the upcoming events. You may use various Apps
such as TeamSnap, GameChanger, etc.
These are great tools that will allow you to upload practice schedules, game schedules, events,
snack shack duty, AND post pictures in the app for parents.
